‘Dad’s My Lucky Charm’: Lydia Ko Hopes Father’s Presence Spurs Maybank Championship Win

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: New Zealand’s golf superstar Lydia Ko, reigning Olympic champion and three-time Major winner, is gearing up for the Maybank Championship at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC), hoping her father’s presence will give her an extra boost.

Ko, who has been in sizzling form throughout 2025, highlighted the motivational role her dad plays during tournaments. “It’s always very encouraging to have your loved ones with you at a major tournament,” she said at her press conference. “My parents don’t see me play as often as they used to, so when they do, it’s a big push for me to perform even better.”

Ko’s father was also by her side earlier this year at the HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore, where she produced one of her best performances, ultimately claiming the title. “He really spurred me on in Singapore,” Ko added. “Hopefully, he’s the same charm this week here in Kuala Lumpur.”

Overcoming South-East Asia’s Challenges

Playing in South-East Asia presents unique challenges, from hot and humid weather to varying course conditions. “The weather here is a big challenge. It gets really hot at times, but that’s what a golfer needs to overcome to win,” Ko noted.

She also praised the support from local fans: “The fans here are wonderful. They really give us a lot of encouragement, as seen at KLGCC in the last two years. I’m aiming for a strong run, and then we’ll see how far we can go.”

Coming Off Strong International Form

Ko arrives at the Maybank Championship with confidence after helping the World Team secure third place at the inaugural LPGA International Crown tournament, alongside teammates Brooke Henderson (Canada), Wei-Ling Hsu (Taiwan), and Charley Hull (England).

“It was a fun outing,” Ko said, “though I wish I had played a bigger part for the World Team. My form has been good this season, and I hope to carry that momentum into this week.”

Ko also discussed course adjustments, noting differences between her home course in New Zealand, South Korea, and KLGCC. “I’ve seen this golf course before, so it’s not completely new. You have to hit it well and make the most of birdie opportunities. Putting will be key this week.”

With a field stacked with top international talent, the Maybank Championship promises to be a thrilling contest. For Ko, the added motivation of family support could be the X-factor in her bid for another victory in South-East Asia.
